YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK
“The Map is NOT the Territory.”
This is a phrase that is repeated often by those familiar with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP.) What does it mean? It means very literally that if you are holding a map of your city, you are not holding your city; you are holding a representation that will never be the actual city. If you want to navigate that city and know where to go, you will act as though the map is literally the city and this is how we interact with not just our geography and cities, but also our
- Past Experiences
- Present Situations
- Future Scenarios
All of these areas of our lives are greatly influenced by the Map we are studying in our mind about those areas of our lives rather than the actual Territory which we are incapable of seeing objectively while standing in the territory. You can’t draw a map of the Grand Canyon while you are rafting the river within. So, while you are in your situation, you are reading the internal Map of your situation and this is very literally causing you to see your territory one specific way.
How is YOUR way of looking at your current situation working out for you??

How does one obtain this map if it is not real and if we have not studied the territory fully? Easy. We make it up. We tell ourselves a nice neat little narrative about our Relationships, Careers, Finances, etc. and most of us do so in a way that indicates that it all needs improvement. Does it though? What if you arrived at Disney World and refused to ride any of the rides or even go in because you read one bad Yelp review? We laugh at this, but we do it all the time. The second you decide that you are ready to commit to a change, your brain looks for all the reasons you can’t do it.
Our Map is not the Territory; we are checking the Map, the Map which is not a Map at all, but rather a mental narrative that we have been unconsciously creating about our circumstances. What if you began now to only see the great things on your Map. There are always great things about every territory even if they are not clearly marked on the map.
DRAW A LINE IN THE SAND
So, now that we know the Map is not the Territory, it is time to draw a line in the sand. On one side of this sandy barrier is the side of the map that is negative and doesn’t make us feel great about the territory, but on the side we are standing on, are the great things about our territory.
- RELATIONSHIPS: What is going great and needs to be duplicated in your relationships
- CAREERS: What is the best thing about what you do, and the next?
- FINANCES: Check right now and see if you have a financial need that must be met this very second? No? Really? Weird.
- PAST: What about your past has empowered you and makes you stronger and wiser? Aren’t you thankful then for some aspect of your past?
PRESENT: What do you have NEED of right now? You are reading a Blog so I am guessing you are not hungry, broke, or blind. Check and see what you NEED to survive. I’ll bet it’s just a Free breath of life giving oxygen.
FUTURE: If your past has empowered you, and your present finds you content and without ANY actual Needs, doesn’t that indicate that your Future is going to be just fine and maybe using this technique, significantly better than fine?
Now, is the place; today, is the time for you to focus on the way you are seeing your circumstances. It is time for you to develop a Map that gives you more happiness, peace, & joy concerning your experience here in this life. Remember, life is not happening to you, it is just happening, the Map is not the Territory and it is ok to change the way you have been seeing your situation. Take this very brief and condensed MINDSHIFT STRATEGY and use it to take control over your own self doubt and struggles and Be Your Own Hero!
