UNIVERSAL BODY LANGUAGE
You walk into a crowded restaurant thousands of miles from anyone you know, but there in the corner of the restaurant, you spot a familiar face and automatically the muscles just above your eyelids constrict, and the orbicularis oculi reveals to the face across the room that you recognize them by lifting the eyebrows suddenly and precisely, and the person in the corner instantly knows you know one another and begins to identify who you are and how you are connected. Sometimes, it is easy because you are very close, but often, we can’t quite place how we know them, but they showed us that we do and our brains are trying to make this fit. This and thousands of similar automatic reactions and indicators are sending all the messages that someone needs when they are trying to unconsciously keep themselves safe by determining whether or not you are genuine, honest, safe, or valuable. So, wouldn’t it be nice to know how to send the messages you would like to send most so you can have more positive social interactions?
As I was training a client one day on how to preframe who he is and what his mission statement was in order to get him to connect with the champion within his own mind, he stopped me and said that he discovered as a kid that as long as he convinced himself that something he wanted to steal “already belonged to him,” that he never got caught. He said that as long as he was convinced in his own mind that he could almost walk right past a police officer carrying a stolen item and know that he wouldn’t even get looked at. There was a difference in his walk, his posture, his demeanor, his behavior, and his universal body language indicated that he did own whatever he was carrying because he was convinced.
KNOW YOUR MESSAGE
People, in general, are not very intentional about the message, or traits they intend to convey to others. So, people don’t Preframe who they are, or what message they want to send to others, and since humans only retain 8% of an interaction, and summarize an entire conversation into a short, simple, concise, narrative that we refer to as “the GIST” of the conversation, we typically don’t convey the most important information that we really wanted or needed to in order to be effective and achieve the outcomes we desire most.
First, as you sit there now reading this article, ask yourself which traits and characteristics are most essential for you to be successful, or well liked, and as you consider what will empower you most, ask yourself
“Is it Honesty, Charisma, Intelligence, Organization, Creativity, Humor, Punctuality. Stability, Safety, Kindness, Empathy, Wisdom, Integrity, etc.?”
no matter which traits are suited best for the perfect version of yourself, you must now visualize & create the perfect traits you want your audience to take away from EVERY conversation, meeting, or interaction and commit to that role and the message that you need to send to your audience most will begin to pour out of you and your body language will begin to align with the universal body language that every person needs to see to believe you.
GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION
Now that you know the traits that matter and the message you have to share with every single person you interact with, you must ask yourself if it is ok to behave this way. If there is any part of you who does not believe in this version of yourself, you will constantly, and subconsciously be indicating that insecurity to the rest of the world, however, if NOW you can connect with the version of you who is powerful, confident, and boldly ready to send a specific idea and message into the heart and mind of every listener of your voice you will realize exactly how this will affect your future in a positive way.
You have to allow yourself to do it though, or your body language will betray you, and that is where most people stop themselves or fail. Most people get to this point and play out a scenario in their own minds where they aren’t that character or can’t provide that message just perfect and that thought limits their superhero role and this creates an internal conflict.
It is time to allow yourself to be ok with the fact that even being intentional can not ensure that your message WILL be heard. The audience you are speaking to may still be incapable of hearing your message and your character in the way you are saying it. Let it go. Allow yourself to connect with that superhero who is inside asking to be let out to take on every task, every obstacle, and every challenge with confidence and fortitude.
