LIVING AS A REFRAMER
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A REFRAMER?
Sometimes life is strange for us, we “reframers,” I mean. We “reframe” while negativity along with the limbic system begin to activate and as it begins to generate emotional action, we pause and Reframe.
We don’t know when it begins, but at some point, we develop a unique skill. We create an ability to find strength in imaginative association and dissociation. Reframers create imagery in our mind to create a reality (plausible, of course) where the injustice we witness(ed) isn’t “cause and effect” BECAUSE we generate our “reasons” based upon our comprehension of the “cause and effect” nature of the universe as we see it, as is the plight of being constrained to the mental capacities of primates; or it could merely be because it’s the only variable within our control. It is difficult to explain and yet easy to imagine.
As you think about what another person could be thinking while they upset you in traffic, you say to yourself, BUT maybe they couldn’t do the right thing because they “almost ran over a dog,” or because they were “distracted by a crying baby.”
Now, extrapolate, maybe it doesn’t matter which distraction you choose to create in your own mind, it is imperative that you allow yourself to actually picture and imagine what it would look like if not just a stranger in traffic, but what if your friend, partner, or colleague did some seemingly terrible thing, but they wouldn’t have if they hadn’t been distracted by a crying baby, a traumatic experience, or an incorrect model of how to live.
Allow that concept to play out in your mind and see if it changes how you feel about the situation or circumstances.
If our fellow primates develop the ability to reframe in real time we will ALL enjoy the benefits of being a collectively more objective observers, in real time.
Here is where we meet the path of transcendence:
Often, when we imagine something we want to do, that experience is better in our vivid imagination than a physical experience MIGHT be, reframing makes it so. . .
We can do nothing or we can do something, and now we know it will be what it is, and it will be nothing more and nothing less and that’s what makes life great.
So, what is Reframingand how can it help you to Be Your Own Hero?
Well, have you ever wished You could change something about your Past, Present, or Future? Stop and think about it a bit before you decide. Imagine, stepping into a time machine and going back to talk to yourself and fix a mistake, or to have the ability to see your current situation through the eyes of Einstein, what if you could literally step into the mind of someone who has never had much to eat and has spent their life never having seen a blanket or iPhone?
Would You still see your problems as all-encompassing?
If you have ever sat in a puddle of regret, anxiety, or self doubt and are looking for a solution or secret to help make life easier, Reframing is for you. This article is designed to empower those who are self-help seekers or personal development enthusiasts to take control of your Past & Be Your Own Hero.
Think about a situation that didn’t go well, one where the results were very hard for you to swallow. As you consider how this happened to you, imagine what someone else might see as an onlooker.
Firstly, what if you were
- Wonder-woman, or
Think about that Past situation from the perspective of a Super Hero. As you watch the Past play out in the mind of yourself as a Superhero, does it change the way you feel about that Past scenario?
I want you to do something now that might seem a bit counter-intuitive, maybe even a bit silly, but I want you to think about that Past situation from the perspective of an absolute Loser; someone who can’t seem to get anything right and someone who would have had even worse outcomes and results than you had. I always imagine the character Ben Stiller plays in Meet the Fockers. I couldn’t even watch the sequel because I can’t stay in that negative head space too long comfortably.
Now, clear that awful thought, and consider your Past situation from the perspective of a Genius; it doesn’t matter if it is Einstein or a fictional scientist like Doc Brown or even a philosopher like Socrates or Aristotle, but make sure you imagine a mind that is incapable of being emotionally connected to this situation and can only see it rationally and objectively as if it were happening to characters in a Shakespeare play or a fictional story that lessons can be learned from with data and records which will help us make better decisions in the future.
REFRAMING ASSOCIATION & DISSOCIATION
Association is the way we associate with our thoughts. As you read through the exercise above, you should have intentionally engaged with the specific images and characters I provided for you or some similar imagery which forces us to change the way we see our Past.
Realize now, that your past did not happen exactly as you remember, and could be seen as entirely different through the eyes of another. Therefore, it makes no sense to worry about the Past and you can now choose to see it however you want because the truth is that it did not happen exactly the way you remember and it is ok to let go of the painful parts and keep the parts that teach us and protect us for later.
