SHIFTING NEGATIVE OUTLOOKS

INTRODUCTION

What is the difference between a negative outlook and a positive outlook? That question seems very easy to answer, but that is only because we assume that language is universal and therefore Negative = Bad and Positive = Good, but what if you grew up in a home where the caretaker used negativity in order to facilitate positive outcomes due to a faulty belief system? For example, in most seminars or workshops, I demonstrate how unproductive and ineffective it is to give “negative” commands.

I will say,

“Don’t imagine a black cat running right here across the floor.”

As I scan the room from face to face, I see eyes light up and lights come on as the attendees realize that they actually did the opposite of what I just instructed them to do and they DID just imagine a black cat running across the floor. Why?! Why would the majority of attendees do the exact thing they were just instructed NOT to do? Are we programmed to be rebellious? No. I wish it were that easy, but that is not what is happening when our parents or caretakers say,

“Don’t look down!” “Don’t let go!” “Don’t panic.” “Stop interrupting.” “Quit drinking so much.” “Stop being lazy.”

I could go on and on with negatively stated commands, but since they are counterproductive to the outcomes most people desire, and we can clearly see the model from the above examples, I think that will be sufficient enough to show us what to “Stop Doing.

LANGUAGE & MIRROR NEURONS

What is actually happening in the mind is relatively simple and only requires knowing how we humans understand language and the discovery of mirror neurons; the human brain’s ability to understand language forces us FIRST to understand the sentence which was just articulated before even understanding the command. We do this by developing mental imagery in real time as we are hearing the sentence being uttered. Once our mind imagines or “sees” the command, mirror neurons activate and begin causing the brain to release the electric impulses, chemicals, and ideal concepts or resources needed to make the sentence happen. What are mirror neurons?

mirror neuron is a neuron that fires both when an animal acts and when the animal observes the same action performed by another. Thus, the neuron “mirrors” the behavior of the other, as though the observer were itself acting. Such neurons have been directly observed in primate species. These same neurons fire when we begin to imagine an action or act in or minds as well which is why when we hear

“don’t LOOK DOWN,”

our first instinct comes from what happens when the brain hears the command in Yoda-like form to

“LOOK DOWN do not.”

POSITIVE COMMANDS

So, how do we shift negative outlooks or self talk to positive outlooks or self talk? Simple. We, by focusing our attention on what it will look like, sound like, and feel like when we have achieved the positive outcomes we do want can articulate that outcome from a positively stated perspective. If I don’t want someone to look down, where do I want them to look? LOOK Up, LOOK Left, Right, LOOK at Me?  If I don’t want someone to let go, what do I want them to do? Hold on, Hang on, Grab tight? 

As you can see, shifting from negative outlooks to positive outlooks can come in many forms, there is not just one way to do this correctly or productively, however there is a wrong way, and that is to continue to focus on the outlooks, outcomes, or situations that you DO NOT want. If you are someone who constantly and consistently provides the problems with situations and no exciting or innovative solutions at the same time as possible positive outlooks or outcomes, you may be a chronic negative command giver and this is not productive to the goals you are indicating that you would like to see more and more in your life.

Focus on shifting your commands to positively stated and well-formed outcomes.
