Living Intentionally? What does that ambiguous and vague snatch of words actually mean to a thinking person? In order to truly engage with what this might mean, it might do us some good to take a trip to Ancient Greece. Meet our Hero, Epictetus, whose name literally means “BOUGHT;” that won’t mean much now until you know a bit more about this stoic philosopher. It seems that when you tell others to be optimistic and think of their situations from a positive angle that this can be dismissed as a philosophy of the privileged and socialites of a community or tribe, however these ideas were first transcribed by many who suffered great loss and in so doing, they were able to find great joy in their ability to “Reframe” their circumstances.

It is said, that Epictetus, who was a slave in Ancient Greece, at one point, had his leg intentionally broken by his master and was thus maimed for the remainder of his life. Somehow, Epictetus, found a way to earn his freedom and is now known as one of the founders along with Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epicurean, and many others, for helping to found Stoicism.  It is this Hero, we will follow into the ways to Living Intentionally.

Why Care About Living Intentionally?

“It is unrealistic to expect people to see you as you see yourself.”

Everyone around us has an idea of us in their own mind that will never actually be close to the real us. In other words, your family, partners, and friends can’t know your every thought, can’t know your exact intentions and therefore WILL imagine a version of you, that is not your true self. If we look carefully at the writings shared with us by this stoic sage, we might find out why it is not just a good idea to live intentionally, but rather, it might be the ONLY way to live in order to effectively leave our mark in the manner that is most aligned with how we would wish to be remembered.

Think now about how you might WISH to be remembered. As you consider this, you may find that it is EASY & FUN to create an image of the ideas and feelings you want to leave behind OR this may seem a foreign concept; if this seems alien to you, it might be easier to imagine a HERO of yours and see if you would like to leave behind a similar legacy.

The True Self

Since we have decided that no one else will ever see us as we truly are, HOW can we be sure to leave our mark in the manner we most would like to be remembered. Firstly, decide now if you want to improve the way you are currently interacting with others. If yes, then this next step will be dynamic and powerful.

Imagine who it is that you wish to be remembered as:

  1. What do you LOOK like when you think of the Legacy you wish to leave behind, what will your Google Bio Pic look like?
  2. What do your loved ones HEAR when they think of you & the sound-bytes of your life? What is your motto, at your funeral what will people say you always said?
  3. How do you want others to FEEL when they remember you?

Take a moment and realize that this image you have constructed is The True Self. This is the vision of that passionate pursuit you desire to leave on your world. So, Are you leaving this impression effectively? Have you been projecting that image everyday with consistency and intention-ality to ensure that the theme of your life aligns with how you want to be remembered? Most likely, you are doing what most of us do and just trying to take each day as it comes and avoiding pitfalls and overcoming obstacles as they present themselves. This is how we view our lives and that is why we are not leaving behind the mark we want to leave with the world.

How to Live Intentionally

Now, you have taken a moment to take all the necessary steps that one must in order to begin to live intentionally, with one exception, Application. How do we apply any of this information. Simple. We are going to Preframe our Intent for the day and allow our Mirror Neurons to do the rest. As you now focus on the list of the 3 items you created in the last section, it is time to think about the people, circumstances, and troubles that you think you might face throughout the day. As you consider the various people you will encounter and the situations that will play out, you must use that True Self we just created to interact with those situations and circumstances. It is important to use vivid imagery and think intentionally on what it will

  • LOOK like

  • SOUND like

  • and most importantly how it will FEEL

to be intentionally interacting with those people and effectively leaving more and more people with the impression of your intentions.

As you consider those faces you will encounter today, how do you want them to FEEL, as you think about the message your peers, loved ones, or children will take away, what are those specific words and how will your face and posture LOOK as you say those powerful and life affirming words?

That’s it, the longer you focus your intent and thoughts on that image and connecting with it as real as you possibly can, the more you will activate mirror neurons which are responsible for helping primates learn new behaviors. As you think on those activities and imagine them to be real, you create new neuropathways in the brain and it will alter the way you interact daily with those situations. It isn’t rocket science, just regular old Neuroscience.

Be Your Own Hero

In conclusion, we can not be understood exactly as we are; at best, we can maintain an overall methodology to our relationships and circumstances by focusing on living according to our intent rather than allowing the idea others have of us to control our moods and actions. Visualizing yourself acting out scenarios in SUCCESSFUL and Productive ways activates Mirror Neurons in the brain which enable humans to immediately adopt new physiological responses to emotional stimulus or emergency situations. Use this MINDSHIFT STRATEGY and all my techniques to empower yourself to Be Your Own Hero!
