HOW TO STOP PROCRASTINATING
How many times have you wished you could find the motivation to stop procrastinating and finish those tedious tasks that are standing between you and a large
- a new client or clientele,
- a romantic relationship,
- or even worse the holy grail of HAPPINESS?
What comes to mind first?
Pssst. . . Great news! It doesn’t actually matter; this MIND SHIFT STRATEGY™ works on ANY activity that is currently causing you to drag your feet! As you think now about the times you have wanted to internally generate the necessary passion and desire to do the tasks you are putting off, which events rush into your mind fastest and could have turned out better for you? Now, that this imagery is clear, what do you mean by
I immediately picture myself staring at my device scrolling through social media when I should be working on uploading my curriculum to my site so people like you can purchase it and be enabled to be their own HERO, but instead I am wasting time on issues that do not pertain to my goals. This imagery isn’t going to cut it though, and we both know why.
That is a typical scenario, one that we all experience, so I don’t care enough YET. I am not YET emotionally attached to this imagery, although, I do feel irritated by this visual concept, I am not disgusted by it, I am not angry about that, I am not truly emotionally charged enough to take action. So, what should we do now? Easy, it’s time to begin the MIND SHIFT STRATEGY.™
First of all, procrastination is a cold wet blanket that doesn’t fit any scenario, the word is vague and ambiguous and doesn’t really give us enough details to really affect our limbic system and therefore can not affect our behavioral pattern(s.)
So, let’s call it what it is.
Procrastination is keeping you from the POSITIVITY on the other side of the procrastination. Let me take you on a thought experiment. Imagine in front of you a bridge standing between yourself and your Goals, and as you see this bridge you can clearly see yourself steadily and consistently capable of crossing to reach your goal. In other words, it may take some time, but you are quite certain that with constant effort you will reach the goal on the other side.
On the other side, your goal is bright and beautiful, it is HD and the smell of victory floods your nostrils and you know it is exactly where you want to go. Now, as you step to cross the bridge someone who looks exactly like you, appears and trips you every time you try to begin your journey; you turn to ask this jerk to cut it out only to see your own face grinning eerily back at you. You are not on your own team yet, and your team needs a cheerleader.
Think now about what it looks like when you sabotage yourself by procrastinating. As you realize that you have been scheming and proactively planning to sabotage your goals, and hurt others you want to help, do you want to allow yourself to continue to do so or would you like to spend some time connecting with the part of you that wants to TAKE ACTION to
BE YOUR OWN HERO
and impact more of the people you love?
THE MINDSHIFT STRATEGY
As I describe this scenario, you may have your own idea of what it means to TAKE ACTION of a situation pop into your mind, this is PERFECT! Use your scenario NOW; the main starting point for this technique to work is
- Find, create, or invent VIVID and emotionally stimulating IMAGERY and mental avatars like the scenario I just described that give you strong associations with what it means to TAKE ACTION. For me, this is often reflected in those we see as A SUCCESS.
- STEVE JOBS
- MARK ZUCKERBERG
- THE ROCK
- GARY VEE
Some people like to use fictional characters
- CAPTAIN AMERICA
- SHERLOCK HOLMES
or Historical Figures
- ARTEMISIA OF CARIA
- ALEXANDER THE GREAT
So, how do you do this? Take an example from above, if this list IS ALL WRONG FOR YOU, no problem! Find your own MODEL for SUCCESS.
This exercise of developing a mental example to look up to is sometimes referred to as a stoic sage in Stoicism; a mental avatar in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and the list goes on and on. It is clear that those who want to modify their behavior or to experience life differently must be intentional about this exercise.
It is time to create your inner super hero, but first a MODEL to base it from. Let’s do so now, what does that HERO look like, how do they carry themselves? How do they speak? What routines are something they do by default? How do they feel about themselves?
Finally, and most importantly: How would YOU feel if you felt like them?
Ok, lets use that imagery to create a mental scenario. Think and focus now while you begin to use your examples to draw a bridge of correlation for your circumstance; some call this METHOD a parable or analogy wherein you find a way to make your actual situation you are living out (procrastination and sabotage) and then you simulate the imaginary HERO acting the NEW way to demonstrate to yourself what it would look like for you to be your own HERO; so, now that you begin to see yourself in your own mind, merge the HERO you were just envisioning with your own idea of yourself. How would you act IF YOU were that HERO we were just thinking of. Notice how you feel when you connect to that idea. As you consider how it would feel to be empowered in this way I want you to begin seeing yourself TAKING ACTION and see yourself GAIN CONTROL over your situation. Now focus on that image as it is vivid and WHILE drawing an emotional correlation to your specific circumstance, think about and write down how that would look. I like to look into my eyes briefly after doing this and committing this image to memory with great intent.
Notice, what you FEEL inside your chest if you TOOK ACTION instead of SABOTAGING yourself? What would others FEEL being around you if you behaved like you believed in yourself and were ON TOP OF THINGS?
- As everyone around you is stunned by your new found confidence, SEE yourself remain calm and collected, you, as THE HERO, are the ONLY one who is capable of successfully being able to TAKE ACTIONnow and you know that you are qualified, strong, and confident that you do have the right answers even if you can not control the outcome. Connect with that image. You have the resources to do that which you have imagined BECAUSE they came from your mind. No one else even knows what it looks like.
With all your strength and courage, readily available now that you are seeing yourself as a HERO, you are now able to do whatever it takes and TAKE ACTION.
NOW, begin to see how your life will improve and how much easier it will be to TAKE ACTION instead of SABOTAGING yourself as we finish this MSS™.
How will your life improve now that this issue is resolved?!
CONGRATULATIONS!! If you took the time to create a mental HERO, and if you stepped inside of that idea of who you want to be, you were able to GAIN CONTROL of your situation; until it is automatic, you should fully create the imagery you need to overcome those fears that use to limit your ability to TAKE ACTION whenever you find yourself lacking that internal fire that causes you to act. Now, that you have done this for your situation
- anxiety, etc,)

- Focus on the end goal and create successful scenarios in your own mind where you were able to be your own HERO and TAKE ACTIONof your situation. Create clear and vivid pictures of the lives which will be changed and the improvements you will feel as you begin to use this FAST & EASY MIND SHIFT STRATEGY™.
As you begin to use this FAST & EASY TECHNIQUE to gain control of THIS situation, you may find a strong desire to use it for other areas in your life that held you back so here is a summary of the 3 steps!
- Find, create, or invent VIVID and emotionally stimulating IMAGERY and mental avatars like the scenario I just described that give you strong associations with what it means to TAKE ACTION. For me, this is often reflected in those we see as a SUCCESS or a HERO.
- Connect and correlate the specific outcomes that would demonstrate why you as the pilot of your situation would benefit from being able to GAIN CONTROL, How do you know you do need to GAIN CONTROL? BE SPECIFIC.
- Focus on the END goal and successfully completed scenario where you were able to be your own HERO and GAIN CONTROL of your situation. Imagine what you will look like, how you will feel about this, and how others will be affected by this positive change.
Great! If you engaged intentionally then you are finished! If not, do it 3 times from start to finish each time connecting more with being the HERO of the scenarios.
