FIXED MINDSET VS GROWTH MINDSET

INTRODUCTION

As you consider exactly why you are thirsting for the best version of yourself, but can’t seem to find exactly what would help you quench that thirst with a solution, you may find this article extremely helpful. This article is about how to adopt a Growth Mindset in lieu of the Fixed Mindset that plagues our culture.

When I meet with clients, I often hear very similar statements,

“I am a perfectionist.”

“I am hard on myself.”

“I am. . .”

Says who?! There is an internal dialogue driving these narratives, but is there sufficient evidence for you to put yourself into a Fixed box in order to make your life make sense? Well, maybe, but maybe your Growth is limited by the way you are telling your story to yourself, and this is most likely thanks to the way someone else told you your story. Maybe it was a personality test, a critical parent or caretaker, a past romantic partner, no matter where that Fixed story came from, it may not actually benefit you at all.

Breaking the Pattern

Do you want to quench that thirst to be the best version of yourself? Sometimes, this exercise can be as simple as using one of the techniques I learned in my NLP course. I call it the Swish Pattern, but some call it the Swoosh Pattern. I have a  video where I walk you through this technique that I will share below, but before I do that, I am going to explain how it works here.

First, it is imperative to think about the traits, behaviors, or thoughts about you which you currently wish you could change. Maybe, you overeat and you don’t want that for yourself anymore. Maybe, you drink too much, or procrastinate, or smoke; whatever your issue is, when you think about yourself doing those actions, you should see yourself doing those things in your own mind. When you consider that version of yourself, is it in color or black and white? Is it blurry or in High Definition? Is it a picture or a movie when you think about it now, how are you telling that story in your mind?

Now, we are going to imagine, create, and recall the perfect version of yourself, the hero within who has already solved this problem. Now, as you consider this version of yourself, is the image within your mind in color or in black and white? Is it blurry or in High Definition? Is it a moving image or a picture, are you in the frame or looking at this version of yourself?

Now, take the idea you had of the you that you wish to change and imagine that picture shrinking down to the size of a quarter and mentally place it on a surface in front of you.

Great! Now, think about the hero within. That picture we created of you who has already solved this problem should be easy to access once again. I need you to take this image and enlarge it, make it vivid and crystal clear; once you have done this, take this version of yourself, the one who has already solved your problem and “Swish” it from y0ur mind to destroy the quarter sized image of you that you just shrunk down.

Stepping into the Frame

Great job, you should do this until there is nothing left of the quarter sized image, but there is one more step in order to make this reality complete. Step into the image and become the version of yourself that is a champion. You must do this in your own mind, but once you have, I want you to consider how this version of yourself will change your life. What is different now that you are this version of yourself?

This image came from within you. I did not create this hero, it could only come from within you, and that is why you were able to Grow now instead of being Fixed to your circumstances.
