DOES ANYONE ACTUALLY NEED DISCIPLINE?!

In February of 2012, I weighed just over 300lbs and was roughly 48% body fat. I experienced many symptoms of Type II diabetes or at least pre-diabetic problems. I then was offered a life preserver from a friend in the form of a suggestion to watch a new Netflix documentary on the problems with the Standard American Diet called “Forks Over Knives.”
After a few years of research into nutrition and overall health, I don’t necessarily recommend this documentary often anymore as it is, unfortunately, really a political appeal to emotion from a group of Vegans who smuggle in the concept by a marketing ploy of renaming veganism as “whole-food, plant based” diet; it is basically a form of propaganda which can have negative consequences without proper education and medical testing.
However, having said that, the actions I took following a mindful consumption of this documentary probably saved me thousands in medical expenses and helped me shift my thinking in such a way that I regained a quality of life that I had not experienced since high school.
Why do I share this? Simply put, due to the physical transformation I achieved, I have been asked to speak on and present on the power of “Discipline” more often than I can count; every time, though, I baffle the hosts when I begin by telling the audience:
“DISCIPLINE IS a DEAD CONCEPT.”
Passion, Purpose, & Pursuit
Discipline is such a negative sounding term to most people. We all assume we need it, we are told a child can’t behave well without it, and coaches and high performing professionals and athletes assert that success is impossible without it.
So, why would I fight against that narrative? Primarily, I counter that argument because I am a contrarian by nature. I like to find the variables which are outside the box of normative thinking. The truth is humans like to focus on one applicable aspect of their story and turn that into the defining factor for their success. Often, in doing so, we lose the foundation that actually caused a lifestyle that appeared to be birthed out of so called “discipline.”
Often, I demonstrate how the mind works in my Seminars and Workshops about Neuro-linguistic Programming or Hypnosis, I will begin by telling the audience,
“Don’t Imagine a Black Cat Running Across the Stage, Here. . .”
Everyone will laugh because by the time they process the information fully, they have almost all imagined a black cat running across the stage. What am I demonstrating? When we consider a thing, our minds begin playing that concept out in our imagination so we can get a vivid understanding of what is being considered. This is why I use a technique I derived from my NLP courses that I call the HAVE | WANT METHOD that connects the audience and my clients to their internal pre-existing Passions, Purpose, & how to Pursue them.
HAVE | WANT
Once I have laid the groundwork, we begin by handing out a worksheet which has two columns. On the left hand, I have a column called “HAVE,” and on the right hand side, “WANT.” The first thing I have everyone write down on the left hand side is whatever negative experience they are currently enduring unnecessarily ie:
- Substance Abuse
- Phobias, etc.
and THEN it is important to connect with the negative emotions which are associated with this “problem,” therefore I have a prompt mid way down the column which asks,
“What is the Problem with this Problem?” In other words, “What is so bad about __________________?” “What does it prevent you from?
NOTE: This is extremely important to the overall efficacy of connecting to our internal, subconscious driving thoughts. We, as humans, are most convinced by emotion rather than logical, rational, or “disciplined” reasoning.
The Right Side
Back to the exercise, on the right hand side, I have attendees write the antithesis of whatever has been written on the left, and this is where most people self-sabotage without the proper coaching and instruction.
What happens next, most often, is that those present will restate the problem they just wrote on the left hand side ie
- I don’t want to be Obese anymore
- I want to be out of Debt
- I no longer want to have Anxiety, etc. . .
Why is this problematic? This format follows the same mental process that we experience when we are told, “Don’t Imagine a Black Cat. . .” it’s already too late, the mind is experiencing what it feels like, looks like, and sounds like to be Obese, in Debt, Anxious, etc. and they are reliving all the negative mental states which align with the list on the left side of the handout.
Shifting the Narrative
What, then, is the answer? Now, I will have them start over on the right hand column and write what they DO WANT, not restating what they DON’T WANT.
Let’s say the client believes that they are obese and they no longer wish to be; I will direct them to focus on what they DO WANT & write out the exact composition that they want rather than what they have ie
- I want to be 200lbs
- 10% body fat
- Size 6 jeans
- Able to run a 5k without stopping
- play hide and go seek with my kids for a full half an hour, etc.
and THEN it is important to connect with the positive emotions which are associated with the solution or “outcome” they have just concluded would be more desirable; therefore, I have a prompt mid way down the column which asks,
“What, if you reach this goal, would suddenly change in your life?” In other words, “What is so good about __________________?” “What does this enable you to do that is so good?”
Solidifying the Passion
Now, we focus on what is under our control, making it realistic, and ensuring that the goal is ecologically balanced. Firstly, we don’t create goals or what we “want” based upon any factors which are not able to be directly controlled. In other words, this has to be something which is entirely within the resources and permission of the person desiring the goal.
Next, we focus on making it realistic. Whatever we write down that we DO WANT, ie being financially stable, having financial freedom, being wealthy etc. needs to have realistic qualities. What would financially stable look like? How would you feel and how would you know if you were financially stable? What sounds would you be hearing if you woke up tomorrow and had total financial freedom. We also write this down.
Finally, would it hurt anyone, including yourself, if you were to obtain that goal? Is it ecologically balanced for your life? Do you give yourself permission to accomplish this vision for your life? If the answer is yes, then you don’t need discipline, you will now be motivated, convinced, and passionate about pursuing this newfound purpose.
