1 Way to Stop Feeling “Down in the Dumps”

We are social creatures. Most of us know that we need people and relationships with others in order to sustain sanity, productivity, and a feeling of purpose.

Recently, for the first time in my short life, we were issued government directives to practice social distancing, self-isolation, and sanitation procedures to flatten the curve of how deadly a world-wide virus would ultimately end up affecting our species.

Our new reality has caused many to find themselves unemployed, angry, sad, alone, and overall feeling blue, and frankly just down in the dumps. As an iBNLP Master Practitioner, we study how to control our emotional and mental states through extremely intentional methods.

Today, I am going to share 1 simple trick you can use to get on the other side of these negative feelings and begin feeling the way you want.

Re-creation aka “Brain Mapping”

Once upon a time, you most likely felt happy. There was a moment within your recent memory or you can recall a time when you felt alive, free, and full of energy. You could see yourself and your life as positive.

You could hear the birds chirping, laughter, and nature as you talked to yourself about how much life was just perfect in this moment. We will now consider the visuals, sounds, and feelings your mind generates when connecting to that moment in time, now.

Visuals

When you think now about that moment, does that instant in time play out in your mind in visuals which are in color or in black and white? Take a moment and consider whether this thought is a picture or whether it is sort of a movie. . .

When you go back there now, are you looking through your eyes or do you see yourself as if you are observing the moment?

Notice now that the more you consider this moment, the more real it becomes to you in this present moment. This can now begin to generate the emotional state you were in during that moment and become a very real emotional state in this moment.

Sounds

Now, take a moment to imagine what sounds were present at that moment in time. Did someone say something to you? Is there laughter, or an internal sentence being spoken in your mind, maybe there are birds chirping, waves crashing, or wind rustling the trees. . .

How loud on a scale from one to ten (1 – whisper/10 – deafening) is your mind recalling this moment to you now? is the sound you hear in stereo or do you go from left to right, or right to left?

Is the sound in regular speed or sped up or slowed down? Notice the more you consider the sounds, the more real this moment becomes to you now.

Kinesthetics

Finally, are there any feelings you experience in your body as you reflect back and go back to that moment now? Do you have a sensation of feeling light, free, or invincible?

Are there any sensations that radiate throughout your body? What direction do they move? Could it feel like the hair lifting on your posterior chain? Is it possible that you feel larger than usual? Consider deeply how those sensations move throughout your body and notice how easy it is for you to be in that emotional state now.

What you just experienced is an exercise I refer to as Brain Mapping. We identify the way the mind is representing a certain emotional or mental state and then we connect to the variables we need as humans to seem real to us. Once we make it real, it becomes something we can experience in a very real way.

There are many more questions and variables we could investigate to make this moment even more real, but this short script normally does the trick for my clients.
